Soft padded calfskin with a patent browband, edges creased and burnished rather than raw-cut, with stainless buckles that do not pit after a wet winter.
Never dry leather on a radiator; it hardens and cracks at the fold. Wash it, oil it, and it will outlast several of the horses it is fitted to.
