Natural sheepskin against the horse, wicking and smooth-faced, with a spine channel that stays open under load rather than flattening onto the vertebrae.
No softener: it clogs the wicking and the pad stops working. Wash it, oil it, and it will outlast several of the horses it is fitted to.
