A pad should lift clear of the withers and stay there. Fascia is cut high and stitched to hold that shape after fifty washes.
Quilted cotton with a wicking lining against the horse, wicking and smooth-faced, with a spine channel that stays open under load rather than flattening onto the vertebrae.
No softener: it clogs the wicking and the pad stops working. Left in daily use, it comes back from a season looking like it has been cared for rather than survived.
